Quickly countertops, tables, tops of dressers, bathroom counters and even your floor can become cluttered. If you or your household have a bad habit of cluttering a space once one item falls out of place- make a rule that those spaces can never become drop zones. I will add that even everyday items can add to visual clutter- just because you use an item everyday doesn’t mean it should fall onto a countertop (ie: a skincare product on the bathroom counter or a pan on the stove).

Observe Your Own Habits and Take Notes
Spend some time trying to identify what habits you and others in your household have developed. Find a new way to coral the drop zones you naturally gravitate towards having. Also, understand that when you make a drop zone you have to maintain it. For instance if you keep your keys, wallet and shoes near your front door- find a piece that will help you store them and limit these quick storage spaces to just 1-2 items that are used daily. Personally, I like to find pieces that have a cover so no matter what is stored inside the space still stays visually simplistic. Also, make sure every item that comes into your household has a space- because otherwise you might be turning to these drop zones for items you have no idea what to do with.
You may find that you keep items because of the time you put into making them (for example old artwork or projects from college), the money spent on them or the fact that they were given to you by someone else. Utilize your digital space and take pictures of items you will want to ‘see’ again in the future- the clutter is taking away from your freedom to feel at ease in your home.
Rehome Decluttered Items Right Away
Rehome or return the items you said you would. These items are just clutter until they are gone. Create the habit of decluttering and immediately listing items for sale, take them to the donation center or rehome them in the same session.
Leave Space
Don’t reorganize your space and expect it to stay organized if there isn’t any extra room. It’s much easier to maintain an organized area when you can easily move things around. During your decluttering process, ensure you leave enough space for new items and a bit more. This will reduce the worry about storing additional items. When it comes to visible storage, aim to leave gaps, as this promotes visual simplicity and makes cleaning easier. By following these principles, you can create a more sustainable and manageable organized space. This tip includes furniture- even if you have everything perfectly organized- that does not mean it will be easy to maintain. Really invest time into decluttering to the point that you have a space that is visually light and manageable even when you open a drawer.
Find Storage Solutions
Sometimes the real problem is that the storage space being used isn't being used effectively. What we are trying to create is easy to access storage spaces that help you keep your space visually light and easy to navigate. Personally I would avoid stacking bins and deep baskets- it is better to split the space vertically than horizontally. Utilize organizers as well- if there are too many items that something cannot close- do not buy another organizer- especially if you are really storing an item there is no reason you should have so much of something that you dont use on the daily.
