Does anyone else feel like Autumn is falling through their fingertips and winter is quickly approaching already? This season can get so hectic that the dinner parties we intend to host seem both distant and imminent at the same time. In this blog, I’ll share some tablescape ideas for the upcoming Thanksgiving and holiday season, along with some wonderful local sustainable businesses from which I plan to buy or rent items for my upcoming gatherings.

Inspiration

This year I am trying to keep waste minimal- if it comes wrapped in plastic - it will not be finding its way onto my tablescape. Doing such limits my decor options - but actually drives the design to be compostable or reusable. As for aesthetics- I am planning on keeping things more neutral- utilizing table linens, glassware and dinnerware that I already own- and adding a pop with the centerpieces.

Centerpieces

Take the guess work out of hosting...

If you have any leftover pumpkins or gourds- I would recommend using those for Thanksgiving and adding in a few candlesticks and tea lights. If you want to switch it up try grabbing some local florals at the Ballard Farmers Market (open 9AM to 2PM Sundays) or some dried branches at the Seattle Wholesale Growers Market (which is open to the public 10AM to 1PM on the weekdays). I also have felt inspired by people sprinkling in with half cut oranges (which you could juice after), dried citrus, nuts, leaves and shells.

Dinner and Flatware

If you do not have enough dinnerware, cutlery or glassware for as many people as you are gathering- avoid opting for plastic substitutions. Try asking your friends if they have any extra pieces that you could borrow and play with a mismatched vibe. If mismatched place settings aren’t the vibe you are going for and you haven’t the time to thrift- try out an event rental. Even for small get-togethers there are quite a few options- my favorite: Rent Borrowed Blu- they have everything- glassware, presentation plates, flatware, candlesticks and more. The vibe this year- brown fabric napkins, copper flatware, clean white dinnerware, clear wine glasses and clay tea cups for mulled wine with desert.

Rental Seating and Tables

Event rentals far extend past corporate events- the only caveat is that you may have to pick up your rental to avoid a small order delivery fee. My tried and true event rental company here in Seattle is Pedersens (located down in the Industrial District), in addition to placesettings, glassware and linens- they have plenty of table and chair options. Skip the stress of keeping decor year round for events that you host annually - outsource.
